Woodturning Instruction

I I teach a 7 hour, comprehensive "Introduction To The Wood Lathe" course at both Woodcraft of Leesburg, Virginia and at my turning shop at Shenandoah Planing Mill, in Charles Town, West Virginia. Hands-on and project-oriented, the class is designed for the complete beginner although many of my students are woodworkers who might have had some lathe instruction way back in shop class but wish to safely reacquaint themselves with turning.

Topics covered include:
*Lathe types, nomenclature, functions and buying advice
*Cutting tools: their purchase, use and sharpening
*Lathe and shop Safety
*Wood suitable for turning and its characteristics
*Techniques of "center work," or "spindle" turning
*Additional resources for the aspiring wood turner
*Class Project: a turned Maple Candlestick with Cherry Base
